WHAT IS BACKFLOW?
Your city drinking water typically flows in one direction, but under certain circumstances it can reverse and flow in the opposite direction or "backflow." This can occur when a water main line breaks or when there is a high demand for water such as the opening of fire hydrants. Under these conditions a low pressure situation can occur and cause water in your water system to flow in the opposite direction and into the city's potable water system.
When backflow occurs, there is a risk that non-potable water—potentially containing contaminants—can be drawn into the potable water system. This reverse flow can compromise the safety and quality of the drinking water supply, leading to contamination that poses a significant health risk to consumers.
Understanding and preventing backflow is critical for maintaining the integrity of the water supply system. Various backflow prevention devices and regulatory measures are in place to mitigate this risk, ensuring that the water reaching your tap remains safe and uncontaminated.
AM I REQUIRED TO HAVE MY BACKFLOW TESTED?
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF A BACKFLOW PREVENTER?
A backflow preventer acts as a check valve and when properly functioning will prohibit water from flowing past it in the opposite direction of a normal flow.
AM I REQUIRED TO HAVE A BACKFLOW PREVENTER?
For the purposes of protecting the municipal potable water system the state of Florida requires a backflow device. The building code requires a reduced pressure type backflow preventer be used on domestic water service lines serving commercial buildings and on residences with large water services. Irrigation backflow preventers can ether use a pressure vacuum breaker or a reduced pressure backflow device when protecting the municipal water system. A reduced pressure type of backflow preventer provides the highest form of protection. The devices are required to be installed as close as feasible to the water meter. There are numerous horror stories outlining actual instances where backflow has occurred causing contamination to the potable water system.
The state of Florida requires that all domestic water backflow devices be tested annually and that all irrigation backflow devices be tested bi-annually.
A licensed backflow tester is required to do the test and a licensed plumbing contractor is required to submit the report and certify that the backflow meets the required standards. Tests are required after repairs and on all new installations. Some municipalities will shut off the water supply if a backflow test is not submitted to confirm compliance. Most cities will send out a notice in the mail to establishments indicating a due date for the backflow certification to be submitted. Most cities require that a fee be paid to the city.
WHY DO I NEED A BACKFLOW PREVENTER IF MY ESTABLISHMENT HAS NO HAZARDOUS MATERIALS TO CONTAMINATE THE WATER?
The statues do not exempt any commercial establishments from the backflow requirements. Many establishments often change ownerships and the degree of hazardous products on site is subject to change. Cross contamination of non-potable water is possible in many establishments if proper precautions are not taken. It is in everyone's best interest to prevent backflow occurrences. The quality and safety of our drinking water is of paramount importance and is a top priority for all municipalities.
